THE ATTACK ON A WRITER IS AN ATTACK ON ART

Writers for Peace Committee are shocked by the brutal attack on Salman Rushdie, one of our

community's most respected members and greatest novelists of our time. Rushdie presided over the

Cities of Asylum Network in the nineties, the predecessor of today's network ICORN Cities of Refuge

where writers are safe but not silent.

His literature has been rewarded and praised, his humanism has been a source of inspiration in the fight

against obscurity and religion used for political purposes.

The attack on his body is the attack on his work and symbolizes the attack on freedom of speech and

creativity.
